E 15: Café Emporio Operating Profit Increased

Date: 20.5.2008
Starbucks, world’s largest café chain, entered the Czech market as late as January this year, but has been growing steadily ever since. Only four months after the first café was opened on Malostranské Square, Prague, the company is opening a fifth one in Avion Shopping Park, Zličín. However, Czech café chains still resist the tough competition of American chains like Starbucks, its sister company KFC, and McDonald’s. For example, Café Emporio, a Czech chain, more than doubled its annual operating profit last year. This has been confirmed by Vladimír Staněk, director of Emporio, although the company does not wish to reveal exact data.

“Theoretically speaking, it is an easy thing to keep opening new and new branches. But each new café is a little bit of a risk, especially because of its location. Our chain underwent a considerable reorganization last year, closing down several branches in regions that did not meet the investor’s requirements. Thanks to this, we have been improving our economic results even this year. In my opinion, many of our competitors have yet to slim down like us,“ said Staněk. According to him, Emporio is ready for more expansion.
